MUDA
Japanese term used for waste generally relates to the 'seven wastes' referred to under 'lean'.
THE SEVEN WASTES
1 OVER-PRODUCTION - making more than demanded
2 TRANSPORTATION - movement of products between value adding operations
3 MOTION - non value added movements within the manufacturing process.
4 WAITING - waiting for materials to arrive
5 OVER PROCESSING - process route over complicated
6 INVENTORY - excess inventory tying up capital and space
7 DEFECTS - waste material, labour
VALUE STREAM
The value and non value adding steps in a process that the customer is willing to pay for.
TACTICAL AQUISITION PURCHASE
Category of purchased items with relatively low associated risks and failure costs.
STRATEGIC CRITICAL PURCHASE
Category of purchased items with relatively high associated risks and failure costs.
VALUE STREAM MAPPING
Technique used to map out and determine where waste or non value adding activities exist within a value stream.
5 WHYS
Simple problem solving technique applying the question why? 5 times. Gets to the root cause simply and quickly.
5S MAP
Map used to pinpoint a place for everthing and everything in its place following a lean 5S improvement drive.
